John Elway cleared in Jeff Sperbeck death investigation, report says

Sports agent Jeff Sperbeck’s death after falling from a golf cart driven by longtime friend and business partner John Elway in a private California golf community in April did not include any criminal activity, according to reporting from 9News.  Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco’s previously told The Denver Post that Sperbeck’s death “appears to be a horrific accident,” then he repeated those sentiments on Friday. “We’ve talked to everyone involved and we found nothing new. There was nothing criminal, it was what we’ve been saying all along, that this was a tragic accident,” he told the station. Sheriff’s officials plan to make a formal announcement about the investigation in the coming days, 9News reported. Sperbeck was taken off of life support on April 30, four days after he fell from a golf cart driven by the former Denver Broncos quarterback at The Madison Club. The sheriff’s office did not begin investigating the incident until days later, following a wave of media attention. Elway was articulate and responsive in a recording of the initial 911 call and was not slurring his words, the sheriff told 9News. The Riverside County Coroner’s Office ruled Sperbeck’s death an accident in May. Bianco could not immediately be reached for comment Friday night. This is a developing story and may be updated.
